Another New Book for the Sibyls and

Trans
Affirming Churches: How to Celebrate Gender-Variant People
and Their Loved Ones
19 Mar.
2020
by Tina Beardsley & Chris Dowd

We are all aware that there remains
a lack of knowledge and understanding about trans people in
the church, and how we, as trans people who are religious,
can experience bias in our faith communities. With the help
of their many years of experience working with trans people
negotiating their relationships with religious institutions,
the authors (one of whom is trans) have created this
accessible, valuable guide that will educate and improve
churches' relationship with trans people. Combining
first-hand interviews, Chris and Tina’s own experiences and
scripture analysis, this thought-provoking guide uses this
combination of ancient and contemporary stories to outline a
theology that welcomes and includes all people whatever
their gender identity or sexual orientation. Written from
this inclusive Christian perspective, the book answers
questions about trans people that are specific to church
communities. The book is available from all good
booksellers. Please buy the book, share with others and
encourage others to buy the book.

THE CONSTITUTION OF THE
SIBYLS WAS FORMALLY ADOPTED ON THE 29th SEPTEMBER 2019 AT
THE SIBYLS TOGETHER MEETING HELD AT THE PURLEY CHASE
WEEKEND, AS HAD BEEN NOTIFIED IN ADVANCE TO THE MEMBERS OF
THE GROUP

The Sibyls had previously been run as an informal
organisation consisting of a group of members, without any
structure in place. In recent years, that informality has
led to increasing difficulties, as legislation, financial
requirements, legal protection, insurance requirements and
safeguarding issues increase.
The constitution has been
written in a way that seeks to make its regulation as light
as possible. As an organisation which
needs to protect the confidentiality of its members,
provisions for dealing with breaches in confidentiality also
need to be put in place.
The turnover of the Sibyls
is too small for it to be appropriate to formally register
as a charity: however having a constitution which clearly
defines its objectives in the required way, should enable it
to apply to the Inland Revenue so that donations to the
Sibyls which are eligible for gift aid may be made.
