One Church, One Faith, One Lord

The validity of Same-sex, or Equal Marriage is a topic which is causing major dissension in the Christian Church. For transgender people there are potentially life changing issues and trauma to be overcome, for both partners, with when one person in a marriage transitions. In the present climate the focus is almost entirely on lesbian, gay and bisexual concerns. The challenges which transgender people face are largely ignored.

A URC minister described her personal journey of understanding of marriage, which has moved from the traditional point of view that it can only “be between one man and one woman for life” to the more open acceptance in the present day. Susan Gilchrist gave an account of her work on the relationships between science and theology as it applies to LGBTI issues. The Church of England Bishop of Salisbury presided at the Sunday Sibyls Communion.

A further session “Transgender perspectives on Marriage” was held to chart the paths ahead in particular from the transgender perspective, and ways of making transgender people more welcome into the Church.   Discussion took place on the present disagreements within the Church, particularly after the Church of England General Synod has passed the motion on welcoming and affirming the gender identities of transgender people, and demands that the government ban "Gay Cure" therapies. We also considered these issues in relation to the Episcopal teaching document on Sexuality and Marriage which is being prepared under the initiative of the House of Bishops in the Church of England.
